Agafay or Merzouga: which desert?

Two very different deserts are sold from Marrakech. Here is an honest comparison, so you know what you are booking.

Short answer: Agafay is a stone desert about 40 km from Marrakech, perfect for a dinner or one night without a long drive, but it has no big sand dunes. Merzouga is the real Sahara, with the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rising to around 150 metres, about 560 km from Marrakech. If you dream of sand dunes, camels at sunset and a sky full of stars far from any city, choose Merzouga and plan at least 3 days.

Agafay: the desert next to Marrakech

Agafay is a vast plateau of stones and low hills south west of Marrakech, with beautiful views of the snowy High Atlas in winter. Many camps offer dinner, a camel walk and a show, and you can be back in Marrakech the same night. It is a good choice if you only have one free evening. Our friends at WhereToGoMorocco explain the difference in detail in their guide Agafay Desert vs Sahara.

Merzouga: the Sahara of postcards

Merzouga is where you find the image most people have of the Sahara: an ocean of orange dunes, camels in line at sunset, silence. Erg Chebbi is the largest and highest sand sea in Morocco. Spending a night here means riding a camel into the dunes, sleeping in a desert camp and waking up for the sunrise from the top of a dune. This is where Abdo was born, and where our camp stands.

How long does it take to reach the Sahara from Marrakech?

Merzouga is far: count 9 to 10 hours of driving through the High Atlas. WhereToGoMorocco details all the options in How far is the Sahara from Marrakech. The best way is to make the road part of the trip, over 3 days, with stops in Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges.

Abdo runs Nomade Life, a tour company that organises private desert tours from Marrakech and Fes, such as the 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. Your desert night is spent at Abdo Luxury Camp. See all our desert tours or our guide on how to get to Merzouga.

Our honest advice

  • Only one evening free in Marrakech? Go to Agafay, you will enjoy a beautiful sunset and dinner.
  • Three days or more? Go to Merzouga. The drive is long, but the dunes of Erg Chebbi are a different world, and most travellers tell us it was the highlight of their trip.
  • Travelling Morocco in a loop? Cross from Marrakech to Fes (or the opposite) through the desert: you see the Sahara without coming back on the same road.

FAQ

Agafay or Merzouga, quick answers

Is Agafay the real Sahara?

No. Agafay is a stone desert near Marrakech, not part of the Sahara's sand seas. For real Sahara dunes in Morocco, go to Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) or Erg Chigaga.

Can I visit Merzouga in one day from Marrakech?

Not really. With 9 to 10 hours of driving each way, plan at least 3 days from Marrakech, with one night in the Dades Gorges and one night in the desert.

Which is better for a romantic night, Agafay or Merzouga?

Merzouga, if you have the time: the dunes, the silence and the stars are unique. At Abdo Luxury Camp we can set a private candlelit dinner for two in the dunes on request.
